Turkish Airlines (THY) launched its flights to Sydney, Australia, last Thursday. With operations now underway, the airline has set its sights on Auckland, New Zealand, as its future destination, potentially its longest route in THY’s history.
Flying to more countries than any other airline worldwide, Turkish Airlines added Sydney, its longest route to date, to its network last Thursday. With a global network spanning six continents and 351 destinations, the flag carrier has achieved another milestone. However, the company’s top management is already targeting Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city, as its future destination, which is expected to become the longest route in Turkish Airlines’ history.
During the inaugural flight to Sydney, Turkish Airlines Chairman of the Board and Executive Committee, Prof. Ahmet Bolat, was absent. On the outbound leg of the route, THY Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Dr. Murat Şeker, and Chief Commercial Officer (COO), Ahmet Olmuştur, participated but did not return. According to information obtained by Haber Aero, the two deputy general managers will meet with Ahmet Bolat in New Zealand to hold talks regarding the Istanbul-Auckland flights.
To enhance its presence in the region through Melbourne and Sydney flights, Turkish Airlines aims to establish a robust network by incorporating New Zealand into its operations. The airline is negotiating with New Zealand authorities to adopt the Melbourne model instead of the Sydney model for this route. It also plans to utilize Fifth Freedom Traffic Rights.
Auckland: 2,000 Kilometers Further Than Sydney
The Istanbul-Auckland route, targeted by Turkish Airlines, is set to break distance records. The flight spans approximately 17,039 kilometers, making it 2,090 kilometers longer than the current longest route, Istanbul-Sydney, which measures 14,949 kilometers.
What Are Turkish Airlines New Flight Routes?
Turkish Airlines has announced new routes on the Public Disclosure Platform (KAP), including Santiago, Chile, and Ohrid, North Macedonia. The airline is also planning to resume flights to Xi’an, China, a destination it previously served but suspended during the pandemic. Other new routes under consideration include Phnom Penh, Cambodia, where negotiations are ongoing. Additionally, Turkish Airlines is targeting a new route in Africa as part of its expansion plans.
